For you Irish Leathems 1865 ‘A NEWS-STORY from Tynan, Armagh, reported in Goulburn concerning a mystery Leathem.’

The Goulburn Herald and Chronicle NSW
13 May 1865

BURNT TO DEATH.-Mrs. Mauleverer, wife of a clergyman residing at Tynan, Armagh, was lying in bed paralysed yesterday (Sunday) evening week, and her daughter was getting a pocket-handkerchief for her, when the bedclothes were suddenly ignited by a candle which was standing close at hand. The daughter ran out of the room to give the alarm.

On her return the room was in a complete flame, and so filled with smoke that it was impossible to remain in it; Miss Mauleverer, however, dashed in, but was obliged to run out again, being considerably burnt.

Very soon a man named Leathem came up to the room, got on his knees, crawled to the bed to search for Mrs. Mauleverer, but she was not there.

Soon, however, he heard a moan, and on crossing the bed through the flames found the old lady lying on the floor, with a blanket on her, in flames.

This he soon removed; and carried her down stairs into another room, where he placed her on a bed.

Here she was attended by Dr. Cuming, who found her burned in several places, with feathers in her mouth, nose, and eyes, and unconscious.

When he removed the linen cloth from her body the feathers on her body burst into aflame, which he at once extinguished.

He got her to swallow a couple of spoonful’s of brandy, but she never rallied, and died in about half an hour.-Liverpool Albion.
