SAVED
FOR POSTERITY
'MOLONG
EXPRESS' FILES FOR MITCHELL LIBRARY
Old files of
the 'Molong Express' going back to 1889 will be added to the historical news papers
section of the Mitchell library, Sydney.
Following
communication between the editor and Mr. W. A. Bayley, of the Library's history
staff, it was arranged at the weekend to send these old files to Sydney.
There
are many old files of the 'Express' which, until now, have been in an old shed
moldering away, and being eaten by mice and other vermin.
Some of
these old copies contain much data about Molong which is of great historical
value.
SEEKS MOLONG
HISTORY
Mr. Bayley
has intimated, that he would like to hear from Molong and district citizens who
have old documents and records of our town. His address is: Public School,
CastleHill.
He will
visit Molong district during his Easter vacation next year to obtain and
collate all these documents.
Mr. Bayley,
who is a life member of the Royal Australian Historical Society, wrote:
'I
sometimes wish that my life was one long school holiday; then I could attend to
things more quickly, but I must make a living whilst the Mitchell Library is
dependent on investigators such as myself to carryout work of such a
specialised nature.
'However, I certainly shall visit your district at no far
distant date and do the rounds of the towns in which your papers are published.
. . .'Shortly you will receive your certificate from the Library, and I might suggest
that you might frame it on your office wall, as many of the donors are doing.
“I thank you
for the publicity accorded in your district: I shall make it a welter when I
call — possibly next May.
'WORLD'S
LARGEST COLLECTION"
Mitchell
Library is built on David Scott Mitchell's original collection of 61,000
volumes, freely given by him to the Nation with £70,000 for its upkeep. Subsequent,
donations, large and small, have combined to make the Library the world's
largest collection of Australian historical documents.
