THE
FOOTBALL CASES.
Following
appeared on a charge of playing a game, to wit, football, in a
public place, on 26th April, 1914, to the annoyance of residents.
Wallace
Leathem, Alexander
Simpson, Leslie Austin, John Johnson, John Larven, Edward Byrnes, Victor
Robards, Ernest Docas, Bertie Larvon, John Angus, Charles Feistead, George
Garlick, Francis Mack, George Johnson and John Chalmers.
Defendants
pleaded guilty, and were fined 5s each, with 6s costs of court, in default
three days in Molong lockup with light labor. The fines were paid.
The P.M., in addressing tho defendants, said, as
far as he was personally concerned he admired the game of football, and many
people thought that even on Sunday, young people were better employed
playing that game than doing' many other things that' might easily be worse.
This charge,
however, was not one of playing on Sunday, but playing to the annoyance of
residents,' that was against the law, and facing on a Sunday such play was more
likely to annoy the public.
In most
towns in the State, and no doubt in Molong, there was plenty of room outside
the town beyond the hearing of residents, where they could play on Sunday, and
be was sure no one would object to that.
